Maungaraki

Maungaraki, a suburb on the Western hills, was opened up for settlement in 1901 when 24 small farms were made available to the public. There was little development for half a century, but things changed in the late 1950s when Lower Hutt City Council purchased land in Maungaraki from Maori and European owners. The modern hillside suburb, we now know as Maungaraki began development in the 1960s and is now home to over 1000 dwellings, many with fantastic harbour and valley views.

Maungaraki is the only Western Hill suburb to have its own shopping centre, school, community centre, doctor and chemist. It also has a restaurant, supermarket and hardware store as wall as a couple of dairy’s and takeaways.

From Maungaraki the Hutt motorway can be easily accessed and when not peak-hour, central Wellington is only a 10-minute drive away. For those who prefer to use public transport, Maungaraki is served well by buses and these connect with trains to and from Wellington city. Even during peek times it is possible to travel from Wellington railway station to Maungaraki shopping centre within 30-40 minutes.
